Competition Outline
Contestants demonstrate their ability to use digital SLR's, image editing software (Adobe Photoshop) and professional studio lighting. Students perform on-site photography, process and print digital photos and submit two 11x14 mounted & matted photographs in advance of the contest to be judged and displayed at the competition. Contestants are evaluated on their mastery of entry-level job skills.
- Each student will submit two photographs to be judged and displayed at the competition. Requirements for prints are as follows:
- Each print is to be mounted on an appropriate photographic mounting material, measuring 16”x20”.
- The total thickness of the finished piece may be no thinner than 1⁄8” and no thicker than 3⁄16”.
- Prints may be no smaller than 80 square inches (e.g., an 8”x10” is 80 square inches) or as large as 16”x20”. All prints, however, must be mounted to a finished size of 16”x20”.
- Prints may be matted or not as the maker chooses, but overall presentation will be a factor in judging.
- All prints must be identified by a label placed on the back with the following information: maker’s name, instructor’s name, school name and address, and high school or college/postsecondary designation. This information should be printed in large, clear, legible writing and affixed to the back of the print, near the center of the top edge.
These prints must be submitted at the beginning of the competition
- There will be a written test (this test will be used in the event of a tie as the tie breaker)
- Location photo assignment – editorial theme, telling the story of the days activity at the Brick Center during the SkillsUSA Competition. (Shoot a minimum of 36 images)
- Photographic Troubleshooting.
Competitor should be able to analyze and correct common photographic problems/issues.
- White balance
- Exposure
- Depth of Field issues
- Composition
- Color Correction
- Color Correction
Competitor will be presented with an image that needs to be manipulated to correct a color cast.
Competitor must leave file open (do not save) so judges can view the history palette.
- Photo Manipulation/Assembly
Competitor will demonstrate skills in:
- Assembly from supplied elements
- Following visual queues to reproduce the sample document.
- PhotoShop skills
- Conceptual Image
Competitor will use images from the editorial shoot to produce a final conceptual image from the theme supplied at the competition
- Portfolio Review
Competitor will present a professional portfolio for review by the judges
This is the proposed outline for t he competition, some items may be eliminated due to time constraints of t he days’ competition.
