NEWS FROM YOUR STATE OFFICE
A Message from the State Director
Welcome to the 2020-21 school year. Needless to say, this has been an unusual year, but we want to announce tentative plans for New Jersey SkillsUSA so you can begin to look ahead and plan accordingly.
Here are some of the activities and events to look forward to:
Virtual Fall Leadership Conference - November 16-20, 2020
We are working with all the other CTSO’s in the state to organize a collaborative four-day, after school virtual conference. Details are still being worked out, but we are excited about all CTSO’s working jointly to offer a unique collaborative experience.
National Fall Leadership Conference, Fall 2020
We are awaiting the final details, but this will be an unprecedented virtual leadership conference experience that will draw upon our national leadership resources. Date to be announced soon.
State Competitions in 2021
We have established the dates for the state championships, so please mark your calendars.
· Saturday, March 27, 2021 - Gloucester County Institute of Technology
· Saturday, April 10, 2021 - Somerset County Vo-Tech
· Saturday, April 17, 2021 - Cumberland County Tech
· Saturday, April 24, 2021 - Sussex County Tech
Note: Membership and State Conference Registration deadline - January 15, 2021
National Leadership & Skills Conference
The national office has announced that the schedule of NLSC competitions will be finalized on December 15, 2020. Plans are underway for an in-person national conference in Atlanta, GA, on June 21-25, 2021.
State Officer Elections
At the present time the returning state officers will continue in their leadership roles since their term of office was curtailed due to the shutdown in March. Plans are being formulated for elections to fill the remaining vacancies sometime in October/November.
While we know these are unprecedented times for CTE and SkillsUSA, please be assured that there will be a robust, albeit virtual, leadership development program this fall. The spring will see in-person state and national competitions, modified as necessary, to comply with health and safety standards.
The national SkillsUSA staff has been rejuvenated with new leadership and a commitment to keeping our organization vital and relevant to the needs of our student members, advisors, and industry partners.
At the state level we plan to use the virtual format this fall to hopefully connect with many more chapter members and student leaders through innovative online programming. One of the strengths of SkillsUSA is that the newly revised program of work aligns with many of the challenges we are all facing in this unusual environment.
